Celebrated Maui chefs Kyle Kawakami, owner of Maui Fresh Streatry, and Sheldon Simeon, owner of Tiffanys/Tin Roof and formerly of Star Noodle in Lahaina, collaborated to prepare nearly 500 Filipino-themed dinners, for Lahaina residents affected by the wildfires. Though these families’ homes were spared, many are still without power or water and thus the Credit Unions of Maui wanted to help them. Credit Union Maui Wildfire Relief Fund, which was initiated by the Hawaii Credit Union League Board of Directors and coordinated by the League’s Valley Isle Chapter, $5,000 was given to Chef Kyle to help defray the cost of and the preparation of these meals to Lahaina residents. Kahului FCU president/CEO Guy Muraoka reported his son Seth, a former student and employee of Chef Kyle, donated toiletries anyone could help themselves with during the event. Kumu Farms also donated fresh papayas. The Credit Unions of Maui are striving to distribute the donated funds directly to the Lahaina residents now and going forward as we see this continuing for years to come. Nearly 500 dinners were made in conjunction with the $5,000 contribution.
