Mahalo, Natalie Sagon HR Consultant natalie.sagon@altres.com (808) 873-0883 Advice from the Federal Trade Commission Picking Up the Pieces After a Disaster Dealing with a disaster is never easy. Here’s some advice to help you avoid common post-disaster scams, protect your personal information, and how to back on track financially. How to Avoid Clean-up & Repair Scams Be skeptical of anyone promising immediate clean-up and repairs. Some may quote outrageous prices, demand payment up front, or lack the skills needed. Check contractors out. Before you pay, ask for their IDs, licenses, and proof of insurance. Don’t believe any promises that aren’t in writing. Never pay by wire transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency, or in cash. And never make the final payment until the work is done and you’re satisfied. How to Spot Impersonator Scams Know that FEMA doesn’t charge application fees. If someone wants money to help you qualify for FEMA funds, it’s a scam. The best place to get information is FEMA.gov. Guard your personal information. Only scammers will say they’re a government official and then demand money or your credit card, bank account, or Social Security number. Know the signs of a rental listing scam. If anyone asks for a security deposit or rent before you’ve met or signed a lease, that’s a scam. Steer clear. How to Get Back on Track Financially You may have left home without IDs, checks, credit and debit cards, and other documents. And you might not have access to your bank account or paycheck for a while. What comes next? Managing Money Report lost credit, ATM, or debit cards to the card issuer as soon as possible. Keep in touch with your employer. If work is closed, or if you can’t go, ask if you can keep getting your paycheck and benefits. Call your provider if you get social services or benefits. Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 or the Veterans Affairs at 1-800-827-1000. Managing Credit Get your free credit report at AnnualCreditReport.com. This can help if you’ve lost financial records and need to identify creditors. Talk to creditors, landlords, and utilities as soon as possible. They may be willing to work with you to avoid late fees, postpone collection, repossessions, and foreclosures. How to Replace Damaged or Lost Documents Here’s a list of where to go for what. Recorded real estate documents: County’s recorder of deeds Mortgages: Lender or mortgage servicer Leases: Landlord or property management company Car title/driver’s license: Secretary of state or department of motor vehicles Birth certificate: Vital statistics office from county where you were born Social Security card: Local Social Security Administration office For more information and advice, visit ftc.gov/WeatherEmergencies Local Resources Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs cca.hawaii.gov Consumer Resource Center 808-587-4272 Hawaii Emergency Management Agency ready.hawaii.gov 808-733-4300 Hawai‘i Community Lending teams with Hawaiian Community Assets to implement housing response. In addition, HCA and HCL are doubling their on-island team and working with partners to help households navigate the filing of insurance claims, applying for disaster recovery funding, stopping foreclosure, and requesting mortgage forbearances. “HCA’s HUD-certified housing counselors will work one-on-one with homeowners and renters to find a way back to home,” said Chelsie Evans, executive director, Hawaiian Community Assets. “I want the community to know that our housing counselors are your neighbors, some of them have losses in this devastation as well. They are here to help you navigate a complicated situation in the most difficult of times.” In addition, HCA counselors will assist families in modifying their existing debts like credit cards, auto loans, and others are also available to reduce your current out of pocket expenses. Clients will be referred to HUD’s Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity if they have experienced housing discrimination and will have access to HCL for grants and loans. SBP will be hiring local people to assist with completing FEMA applications and filing appeals for denials. Financial assistance is available for disaster victims. HCA will match households 3:1 on funds up to $1,000 for a total of $4,000 for first month’s rent and deposit to native Hawaiian families on Maui. In the weeks following the wildfires on Maui, our teams have been working nonstop to ensure our clients’ employees continue to get paid, have access to their benefits, and receive vital, accurate information as quickly as possible.
We know that the needs of the community will be far-reaching and ongoing. For the thousands of Maui residents who have been tragically displaced from the workforce, we are committed to keeping them right here in Hawai'i.
Last week, the ALTRES Foundation launched HireMaui.org, a free job board created in partnership with the State of Hawaii Department of Labor & Industrial Relations, Maui Economic Development Board, Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, and other community groups. HireMaui is exclusively focused on providing employment opportunities for Maui residents impacted by the wildfires.
Getting people back to work is the first step to rebuilding, and our hope is that HireMaui.org will serve as a central hub for employers around the state to connect with Maui workers, fill needed positions in every industry, and help get our community back on its feet.
If your organization has any open positions, and you are interested in possibly filling those positions with candidates from Maui, we invite you to add your jobs to HireMaui.
Through our collective efforts, we can help give those who have lost everything a sense of hope for the future and allow them to stay close to home.
Thank you for your consideration and should there be anything we can help you with, please contact me anytime.

Hawai‘i Community Lending teams with Hawaiian Community Assets to implement housing response.
Hawaiian Community Assets (HCA) and Hawai?i Community Lending (HCL) announced today a two-phase Maui Response and Recovery Strategy focused on housing starting Mon., Aug. 28. The strategy prioritizes increasing public awareness and access to homeowner insurance, disaster assistance, and grants and loans for recovery and rebuilding. The organizations will be working out of community hub offices in West Maui and at the Maui Mall managed by the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement.
“We know our Maui ‘ohana is facing very difficult times right now. We stand with you,” said Jeff Gilbreath, executive director of HCL. “HCA and HCL were founded in the Paukukalo homestead on Maui. We have kuleana to all of Maui. Our team is here to help our people save homes from foreclosure, keep access to their land, and rebuild how they want to rebuild.”
Beginning Mon., Aug. 28, HCA and HCL kicked off the Phase 1 – Response including a public awareness campaign, education and counseling, and assistance with applications for FEMA, SBA, and insurance. HCA and HCL will get information to the general public via social media.

The public awareness campaign provides accurate information about filing insurance claims, applying for disaster assistance, requesting mortgage forbearances, and preventing scams and displacement from the land by predatory investors.
They are here to help you navigate a complicated situation in the most difficult of times.”
In addition, HCA counselors will assist families in modifying their existing debts like credit cards, auto loans, and others are also available to reduce your current out of pocket expenses. Clients will be referred to HUD’s Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity if they have experienced housing discrimination and will have access to HCL for grants and loans.
Disaster assistance applications and appeals will be managed by HCA and HCL’s national partner, SBP, which was established by the New Orleans community impacted by Hurricane Katrina.
HCL has established the Kanaka Anti-Displacement Fund to prevent displacement of kanaka maoli (native Hawaiians) from Maui and other areas in Hawai‘i impacted by natural and human-made disasters. **HCL will launch this fund in early September.
Phase 2 - Recovery will focus on helping impacted households to rebuild. This will include engaging community to promote equitable recovery for Native Hawaiians and other underserved communities impacted by the disaster.
The organizations have convened a team of 12 specialists with expertise in emergency recovery, HUD housing counseling, community owned real estate, homeowner and renter financing, construction, development, and affordable housing policy to establish a long-term plan for assisting Hawaiian and local communities rebuild as they want to rebuild.

Maui Wildfires Webinar Support for your team, yourself, and your community
Supporting employees after a tragedy is often difficult and complex to process as individuals and as a workforce. The feelings that arise often involve grief, loss, and sometimes fear or even anger. Providing a safe place for employees to seek support and resources they have available to them is important. It is also important to take care of yourself and know that you do not need to solve or fix things for them.
This 45-minute webinar is focused on providing tools and resources to help your managers and leaders support their staff. We may provide subsequent webinars focused on supporting your leaders and staff in the weeks ahead based on your feedback. Our hearts go out to our members directly affected by the wildfires on Maui.
